helping students enjoy Math

Meet Carolyn Malloy
Owner of Math With Miss Malloy
Hi! I’m Carolyn Malloy, the owner of Math With Miss Malloy. After thirty wonderful years of teaching, twenty-five of those in the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District, I’ve retired from the classroom, but not from my passion for helping students succeed in math! I’m thrilled to continue that work through tutoring.
Over the years, I’ve taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, and for the past seven years I’ve served as my school’s Math Basic Skills Teacher (Interventionist) as well as an Accelerated Math Teacher. In these roles, I supported students in grades 1–5 who were struggling with math, helping them build confidence and strengthen foundational skills, while also teaching advanced 5th and 6th grade content to accelerated 5th graders in a one-year course. This wide range of experience has given me a deep understanding of the skills students need to carry from one grade to the next, as well as how to prepare them for future success. I hold a Master’s Degree in Education along with certification in Special Education, which allows me to tailor instruction to meet the unique needs of every learner.
Math has always been my favorite subject to teach, and I strongly believe in using the CRA approach—Concrete, Representational, Abstract. This research-based method helps students truly understand math by starting with hands-on materials, moving to visual models, and finally connecting concepts to numbers and symbols. This helps develop a deep, lasting understanding.
My goal is to make math meaningful, approachable, and fun for every student. Whether they need support, enrichment, or just a confidence boost, I’m here to help them thrive.
All About Miss Malloy
Private one-on-one tutoring
One-on-one tutoring provides a unique and powerful level of personalized support. In individual sessions, I tailor instruction specifically to your child’s needs—focusing on the exact concepts they’re working on in school while also filling in skill gaps and building long-term confidence. Lessons move at your child’s pace, ensuring true understanding and less frustration.
When we speak at our initial consultation I like to discuss the needs of your child and the goals you have for tutoring. That helps me best determine how to set up our tutoring sessions. Each tutoring session can consist of a combination of the following:
Reviewing content and lessons being taught at school
Targeting areas of struggle
Addition and Subtraction Facts Through Number Sense (grade 1-2): A step-by-step program that builds number sense beyond memorization, with weekly strategies, practice cards and at-home games.
Multiplication Fact Strategies (Grades 3-4): A structured, strategy based program that helps students understand multiplication facts conceptually. Each week focuses on a specific strategy, reinforced through games and at-home practice.
Problem Solving: A step-by-step program that guides students through all of the main types of word problem formats (join, separate, compare and part-part-whole). Within each format students learn to solve problems with the unknown in different positions, building strategies they can apply with confidence.
I’ve shared more about my teaching approaches in the blog posts below:

Third and Fourth Grade Multiplication help Groups
Is your child struggling to remember their multiplication facts?
I can help.
While many of us remember learning multiplication facts through repetition, flash cards and timed tests, this approach doesn’t work for all students. The process of memorizing facts is just that-a memorization task. Similar tasks could be memorizing states and capitals, memorizing spelling words, etc… This is a specific skill that some students excel at, but not all students.
In this fun group class, we will focus on one fact at a time and explore it through hands-on activities, partner work, and fun math games. Students will learn specific strategies that make multiplication make sense, not just something to memorize.
To keep the learning going at home, I will also send families weekly games to play together. With this approach, students gain confidence, flexibility, and fluency.
